Angkor Wat – Sunrise

After South and Central America, I was feeling pretty ruin-d out. Literally ruined. These incredible feats of ancient engineering defy belief, but like churches, after a couple of different ruin sites they start to look the same.

So with a nice passage of time between archeological explorations, I was pretty excited about discovering the incredible temples of Angkor Wat.

I woke at 4am so I would arrive in time for the sunrise, and like Machu Picchu, you’ll face plenty of tourist hustle. But it is certainly worth the sleep deprivation to experience the magic of the candy-coloured sky, as the sun peaks its weary head over these feats of human ingenuity.

I had my tuk tuk driver (organised through the hostel) for the whole day, for only $15USD, and with the searing heat, especially as the hours creep closer to midday, it’s more than definitely worth it.

I’m not even going to try and explain the magic of being in such a spiritual and awe-inducing site, it’s only something that can be experienced first hand. So instead I’ll leave this little photo montage below to hopefully inspire you to take the journey into the lives of Khmers and buddhists of years past.
